Essay Topics: How to Use Political Correctness in Your Writing

Essay Topics: How to Use Political Correctness in Your WritingWriting essays is a challenge for many students, especially in their senior year. With such high expectations, it is important to find interesting essay topics that will help them meet these expectations. One of the best essay topics in today's society is political correctness. Not only is it a topic that can be used to give your students some homework, but it can also help you, as a teacher, set some expectations for your students when it comes to essays. What is Political Correctness? Political Correctness is a system of rules and regulations on how to act in regards to certain topics and issues. It is a way of treating certain topics as taboo, whether they are politically incorrect or not. While students may not understand exactly what the purpose of Political Correctness is, they know that they will not be in violation of those rules if they follow them.To help students understand the concept of Political Correctness, c onsider the following scenario. A family has just been moved into a new house. The family finds that they are required to change all of their furniture, including the sofa and bedding. After a couple of weeks, they notice that they do not have enough room for their new furniture and decide to bring it back.If this situation were to happen, the parents would be well within their rights to ask for certain furniture back, such as the old sofa and bedding. This is true, however, since the new furniture is a more expensive and higher quality sofa and bedding than the old ones. Because of this, the new furniture should be treated differently and made to fit the standards that the old furniture was brought in with. What can we learn from this example? First of all, Political Correctness is not about respecting one another. In fact, the political correctness rule in this situation states that anyone with the right to say that the furniture is 'too small'too big' should be given a point for t heir attempt at decorating their new home. Therefore, this scenario demonstrates why even if you feel the furniture is unnecessary, you should let your students bring it back because they broke the political correctness rule. What is the second thing that you can take away from this scenario? Political Correctness is not about respect for other people. Whether a student brings back their furniture, or not, it does not matter because as long as they followed the rules of Political Correctness, they deserve to be treated with respect. Since everyone is different, everyone deserves to be treated with respect. If you are a teacher and you feel that you must set a standard for your students when it comes to their essay writing, consider a scenario that illustrates how the standard should be written. Consider that you are looking through the newspaper to see if there are any special cases that are going to affect your class in some way. Perhaps a student is born in February, while another i s born in March. You would be very proud of your new student who was born in March. But, if a student is born in February, then that student deserves to be treated differently. In short, if you want to set some realistic and measurable writing guidelines for your students, consider the example above and write down the dates of birth of your students for a moment.
